Braunschweiger Dom, Dôme Saint Blasii,
4.04 - 8.05.2001
The Dome is now a Protestant Lutheran Cathedral.
Built in Romanesque style between 1173 and 1195 after the return of Heinrich der Löwe (Henry the Lion), Duke of Bavaria and Saxony, from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, it was consecrated in 1226. Henry the Lion is buried there (1195) .
Among the many objects of historical value
displayed in the cathedral and its crypts are included:
- The tomb of Henry the Lion and his wife Matilda of England, considered an important piece of medieval sculpture.
- The "Imervard" cross, presumably older than the cathedral.
- The altar of Mary (Marienaltar), the only altar having survived since the time it was built in 1188.
- The famous seven branches candelabra built in 1190, consisting of 77 bronze pieces. Five-metre high and four-metre wide, it recalls the menorah and the tree of life.
- 4 sundials (1334 -1346, 1518 and 1723) and 12 bells which are among the most powerful of Germany: they date from the 15 - 16th century and still toll for 10 minutes every day.
- The large crypt where rest the members of the Welf Dukes of Braunschweig dynasty (17th-19th century).
- The Lion of Braunschweig in the square before the cathedral was built around 1166 by Henry the Lion. It is the very symbol of the city, the oldest surviving monumental sculpture of the Middle Ages north of the Alps chain and the first figurative sculpture cast in iron since antiquity. It weighs 880 kg and was originally gilded. The artist is unknown but, considering the delicacy of the carving and the state of the art of bell founding in the 12th century, he must have been definitively an experienced goldsmith. The original is preserved in the Museum of Braunschweig.
